A Few Apple Updates
29 February 2008Last week, Apple released another version of iTunes (7.6.1) through a routine update.
It includes several bug fixes and is designed to improve compatibility with the enhanced Apple TV.
Also, it looks like iTunes movies rentals are becoming available sooner than was previously expected.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs originally said that digital rentals would appear 30 days after their DVD release. Movie studios wanted to hold back on-demand products like rentals for 30-45 days after its DVD release to avoid sales cannibalization.
Consumers are reporting that several movies are actually appearing on iTunes only days after their DVD release. Movies like “The Invasion,” “No Reservations” and “Michael Clayton” have appeared as early as a day to as late as a week after the DVD release.
It also seems that Apple has pricing flexibility with some of its movies.
There was a “Weekend Movie Rental Special” recently on iTunes, where “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” among other older films were discounted to $0.99 from the usual $2.99 fee.
