China-Made iPhones Smuggled Back into China

22 February 2008

This is straight out of the Ripley’s Believe it or Not book. Apparently, thousands of Apple iPhones that were made in China and exported to America and Europe are smuggled back into China, where the digital locks of the cool device are broken so that they can be used on local cellular networks. You see, the iPhones are hot in China too, where Apple has yet to sign a deal with an operator. It seems the Chinese are willing to fork out $450-$600 for the iPhone, which sells for $400 in the US.
