IPass Hits on Tata Wi-Fi
8 February 2008Tata Indicom and iPass have announced that iPass customers can now access the hundreds of Tata Wi-Fi hotspots that were added into the iPass Global Broadband Roaming Network.
With this addition, iPass customers will have reliable, high-speed connectivity across India’s largest 20 cities - including the larger business centers such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. Wcities recently rated Mumbai the 10th top Asian city for mobile devices.
Tata Indicom is offered by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), part of the TATA Group. VSNL’s hotspot locations vary greatly, including: airports, train stations, stores, hotels, schools, stadiums, hospitals, restaurants and cafés. VSNL president of retail business unit Shankar Prasad said, “VSNL has been leading the growth of the Wi-Fi industry in India and today has the largest Wi-Fi deployment among domestic ISPs.” Currently at over 350 hotspots, Prasad added that the company is looking to expand to over 1,000 by the end of the year.
This partnership gives iPass customers access to new airports, pushing iPass beyond the 450 global mark. Customers now have access to over 90,000 Wi-Fi hotspots globally. We last took note of iPass in July of 2007 when iPass and Taiwan’s Chungwa Telecom paired up. These two companies launched Asia’s first regional flat rate unlimited Wi-Fi, wired broadband and dial-up access across the continent.
