Zodigo: Mobile Content Search Engine That Needs No Mobile Device to Use

1 February 2008

Interactive TV software developer Zodiac Interactive has announced a new mobile content search engine, Zodigo, currently being shown off at the Demo 08 conference.

Zodigo is a software platform built for digital TVs, Blu-ray and HD-DVD players, gaming consoles, and Web sites like Zodigo.com. Yes, Zodiac is hoping that you will use your plasma TV or your Wii to buy content that is only for your mobile phone.

Matt Johnston, Zodiac’s senior VP of strategy and CEO of Zodigo said, “Zodigo was developed with a better shopping experience in mind and the result is an easy-to-use search experience that helps create a truly long-tail of mobile content discovery.”

Zodigo is honestly a good idea. It is far easier to discover content and browse via PC or TV screen than it is on the mobile screen. A downside, however, is that users will see the content on a much larger, generally higher-quality display and may be disappointed when it comes to viewing the content on the mobile device.

Zodigo is currently offering three ad-models for advertisers wishing to place ads on its site, but Zodigo has not announced any free content. According to its Web site, “You pay for the actual content, but Zodigo’s service is free.” An ad-supported pay-for-content model might not be the strongest approach to take, but the service is just being demonstrated currently, so there’s time to figure out what works.
