Skyfire Brings PC Internet Experience to Mobiles – No WAPs or .Mobi Needed

1 February 2008

Skyfire has unleashed a mobile browser that makes browsing on a smartphone feel like browsing on a PC.

Skyfire lets smartphone users have a “real Web” experience by utilizing and working with Flash, Ajax and other Web technologies. Skyfire is not used to access mobile-friendly sites and WAP sites, it is used to access the regular versions of Web sites geared towards PCs and notebooks. The browser is free and since it offers Flash it’s sure to be a hit with YouTube. Skyfire also aims to give users access to all the features and add-ons of the PC versions of Facebook and MySpace.

“For too long consumers have been promised the ‘real Web’ on their phone, only to be disappointed by slow rendering, error messages, no Flash support, watered down WAP pages or second-rate mobile versions of their favorite site,” said Skyfire CEO Nitin Bhandari. “Skyfire has remedied those ills at a speed not seen before on the mobile platform. By extending the PC Web experience to smartphones, we fully expect Skyfire to fundamentally change the way people use their phones.”

Skyfire has announced a private beta for Windows Mobile phones, including the touch screen models, in the US. Skyfire will introduce a Symbian version in the coming months and has plans to expand quickly there after. Users can sign up for the private beta at www.skyfire.com.

ABI Research has said that 115 million smartphones were shipped in 2007, and that number will rise to 410 million by 2012. By introducing a product that can make browsing easier and more familiar, Skyfire has the potential to make its way on to every device that can support it, and being free will certainly help.
