PBS and Local PBS Stations Launch Content on iTunes U

1 February 2008

There’s a new source of free, educational high-quality videos and other content hitting iTunes U – an area of the

Apple iTunes Store for educational content – thanks to PBS and some of its local stations. The stations involved are:

* KQED – San Francisco

* WETA – Washington, D.C.

* WGBH – Boston

* WNET – New York

Found in the Beyond Campus section of iTunes U, the initial offers will feature lectures, interviews and teacher’s guides along with a variety of other niche materials. This content will also link to other currently available PBS content, from coral reef and solar eclipse documentaries to examinations of countries to in-depth interviews with authors and storytellers.

“PBS and our leading stations are at the forefront of the digital education movement,” said PBS senior VP of Education Rob Lippincott. “A wonderful demonstration of this commitment is the breadth of state-of-the-art educational content available on iTunes U.”

KQED’s executive interactive director Tim Olson said, “We’ve already discovered how offering extensive free video, audio and lesson plans has empowered teachers and students to develop the skills necessary to thrive in the 21st Century and to bring skills which can be applied to their own communities. ITunes U is a natural environment for public broadcasting companies in this effort.”

KQED and the other three stations have all expressed great hope that the iTunes content will provide more content than ever to engaged and potentially new viewers.
