Breaking In The New Market, a la Mobile Busts a Move on Android

19 January 2008

A la Mobile, a big player in Linux platforms and open source
technology for mobiles, showed some love to Google’s Android with
the first industry demonstration of applications based on Android’s
framework. On an HTC Qtek 9090 smartphone, a la Mobile demonstrated
a browser, phone dialer, maps, camera function, audio player, games,
notes, calendar and a contacts and task manager.

While the market can’t seem to wait for Android, there still seems
to be many concerns about the technical aspects and readiness of the
system. “As the leader in mobile Linux, we believe it is our
responsibility to take the initiative to allay the ‘mystery’ and
dispel any skepticism surrounding Android,” said a la Mobile CEO
Pauline Alker.

Android provides an Application Program Interface and a framework to
allow third-party companies to create applications with a unified
standard. Despite the nature of Android being open-source, it is
quite difficult to develop a mobile system with rich, useful
features for it, which seems to be a hurdle keeping many vendors and
companies at bay.
